Psychological insights on relationship conflicts and communication

A psychologist explains that the tone of voice often causes more damage in partner arguments than the actual words used. Non-verbal cues, such as sighs, eye-rolling, or sharpness in voice, can transform mundane topics into accusations. While people rarely remember specific words after a conflict, they tend to remember how their partner's tone made them feel.

To prevent escalation, experts suggest recognizing when one's own voice becomes too sharp and offering a sincere apology to take responsibility. When faced with a partner's harsh tone, it is advised to break the cycle of retaliation by calmly stating that the tone makes it difficult to listen, rather than responding with similar aggression.
