Psychological strategies for ending unproductive arguments

Psychological experts suggest specific communication techniques to terminate unproductive arguments and preserve mental peace. Dr. Bruce Y. Lee refers to certain phrases as ‘fuses’ that can abruptly change the course of a conflict through unexpected kindness, humor, or a proposal to pause the discussion.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Patrice Berry notes that many conflicts stem from misunderstandings and poor communication, where individuals interpret words through their own experiences rather than the speaker's perspective. Setting boundaries allows a person to prioritize their own peace over endless debate.

Psychologist Abby Medcalf adds that conflict requires two participants; if one person chooses to stop, the intensity of the argument diminishes. Effective phrases include stating ‘I do not have time for this right now’ to set boundaries, ‘Just forget about it’ to cease investing energy in a conflict, or ‘You do not understand my position’ to highlight a lack of mutual perspective.
