Psychological strategies for managing homesickness during major life transitions

Psychologists suggest that homesickness is a common part of major life transitions, such as relocating for a relationship or starting college. The feeling often involves missing specific elements like routines, language, people, or a sense of familiarity.

Stephanie Marcello, chief psychologist at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care, notes that individuals can feel excitement for new experiences while simultaneously missing home. For college students, technology allows for constant connection with family, but experts suggest that developing autonomy and building new routines is essential for healthy psychological growth.

Strategies to manage homesickness include breaking down exactly what is being missed to recreate small pieces of it, establishing independent routines outside of primary relationships, and limiting constant contact with home to remain present in a new environment. Signs of distress may include persistent sadness, anxiety, irritability, or changes in sleep and appetite.
