Psychological strategies to combat monotony and routine

Dr. Max Alberhasky, an adjunct marketing professor at California State University, suggests that introducing intentional variety into daily schedules can help break the cycle of living on ‘auto-pilot’.

According to Alberhasky, the phenomenon of ‘hedonic adaptation’ causes individuals to become accustomed to repeated experiences, which diminishes the initial excitement or pleasure they once provided. While habits offer practical benefits such as organization and time efficiency, excessive repetition can blunt emotional responses.

Citing a study published in Nature Neuroscience, the research indicates that increased variety in physical locations is linked to improved moods. The study, which used GPS tracking to monitor participants over several months, found a bidirectional relationship: exploration leads to better moods, and better moods encourage further exploration. To combat monotony, Alberhasky recommends seeking new experiences, such as exploring unfamiliar routes or learning new skills, even within close proximity to home.
