Psychological studies examine attraction and relationship compatibility

Psychological perspectives on attraction and relationship longevity highlight the distinction between initial chemical euphoria and long-term compatibility. Psychiatrist Marian Rojas Estapé suggests that because early-stage romance can cloud judgment, individuals should ask two critical questions before committing: ‘Is this relationship right for me?’ to assess shared life visions, and ‘Does this relationship make me a better person?’ to ensure personal growth.

Complementary research into social perception examines how visible physical disabilities influence attractiveness and desirability. A study conducted in the United Kingdom found that perceptions vary significantly by gender. While men rated women without visible limb amputations as more attractive and desirable for both short- and long-term relationships, women did not show similar rating differences for men. Notably, women rated men with visible physical disabilities as more emotionally intelligent than men without them. The study indicated that the visible characteristic itself carried more weight in initial judgments than the perceived cause of the disability.
