Psychological support and respite centers in oncology care

Psychological support is increasingly recognized as a vital component of cancer treatment, benefiting both patients and their caregivers. Specialized psycho-oncologists can help patients manage the emotional upheaval following a diagnosis, addressing fears, fatigue, and the loss of personal identity during treatment. This support also extends to caregivers, who often face anxiety and exhaustion while attempting to remain strong for their loved ones.

In Belgium, the King Baudouin Foundation is funding a two-year study at KU Leuven to evaluate the impact of respite centers (maisons de ressourcement). Led by Dr. Nele Van den Cruyce and Prof. Dr. Koen Hermans, the research aims to measure the unique benefits these structures provide to cancer patients and determine how they contribute to the broader healthcare system.
