Psychological support prioritized during humanitarian crises
Psychological support is increasingly recognized as a primary necessity during humanitarian crises, rather than a secondary concern to be addressed after physical emergencies. In the wake of earthquakes in Venezuela on June 24, the Colegio de Psicólogos del estado Bolívar implemented a contingency plan to provide free emotional support.
Through a dedicated website, emergency telephone assistance, and WhatsApp messaging, professionals are offering remote psychotherapy to those in high-impact areas. Volunteers report that many affected individuals are experiencing high levels of anxiety, sleep disturbances, and constant hyperactivation. The initiative aims to provide psychoeducation regarding trauma and help the community manage collective grief and emotional regulation.
