Psychological trends show rising fear of vulnerability in modern dating

Research and expert insights highlight the psychological challenges of modern dating and relationship transitions. Data from the dating application Hinge indicates a growing fear of emotional vulnerability. According to Moe Ari Braun, a connection expert at Hinge, social media has fostered a culture of ‘playing it safe,’ where individuals feel pressured to curate their personas to avoid judgment. The study found that 52 percent of respondents reported feeling ashamed after opening up emotionally, a sensation described as a ‘vulnerability hangover.’ Additionally, a significant portion of Gen Z—including 50 percent of men and 45 percent of women—reported becoming more cautious about emotional openness due to social media influence.

Regarding the aftermath of breakups, therapist Jamie Bronstein advises against impulsive decisions driven by intense emotions. While 59 percent of individuals surveyed by Dating reported spending money to cope with a breakup, only 28 percent found it truly helpful. To protect mental health and finances, experts recommend archiving rather than deleting memories to avoid future regret, limiting time spent ruminating on the past to 15–30 minutes daily, and using journaling to process emotions.
