Psychological violence impacts women's physical and mental health
During 'Agosto Lilás', a month dedicated to raising awareness and combating violence against women, specialists are highlighting the severe physical and neurological consequences of psychological abuse. Although psychological violence—including humiliation, threats, control, isolation, and emotional blackmail—does not leave visible bruises, it can cause profound damage to a woman's health.
Psychologist Dulciana de Souza Lima from Hapvida explains that constant fear and tension keep the body in a continuous state of alert. This prolonged stress can impair cognitive functions such as attention, memory, concentration, and decision-making. Victims may experience mental fatigue, confusion, and difficulty planning or evaluating alternatives as the mind prioritizes identifying potential threats.
The impact also extends to physical health. Prolonged exposure to emotional abuse can lead to headaches, muscle tension, gastrointestinal issues, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. Additionally, the persistent sense of danger can trigger anxiety and panic attacks, potentially altering how the body perceives pain.
