Seasonal health: Managing autumn depression and sleep changes
As autumn approaches, health experts are highlighting the physiological and psychological shifts caused by seasonal changes. A primary concern is seasonal depression, a subtype of major depressive disorder. Psychologist Fatma Zehra Turan notes that reduced daylight can disrupt the circadian rhythm, affecting sleep, appetite, and energy levels by altering melatonin and serotonin production.
Sleep patterns are also significantly impacted. Dr. Kat Lederle explains that earlier sunsets trigger earlier melatonin release, making people feel sleepy sooner. While cooler temperatures can actually aid sleep by helping the body lower its internal temperature, experts suggest gradual adjustments to bedding to maintain comfort.
Other factors contributing to autumn fatigue include changes in vitamin D levels and shifts in daily routines, such as spending more time indoors. To combat the ‘autumn blues,’ experts recommend increasing exposure to natural light during the first half of the day, maintaining physical activity, and using certain scents like citrus or coffee to boost alertness.
