Psychologist Aldon Tartt discusses mental health challenges
Psychologist Dr. Aldon Tartt has highlighted how individuals often mask mental health struggles behind superficial responses such as ‘I’m good’ or ‘I’m blessed.’ Speaking ahead of World Mental Health Day, Tartt suggested that asking more direct questions, such as ‘How happy are you with your life?’, can lead to more meaningful emotional disclosures.
Tartt noted that stress frequently manifests through physical symptoms rather than visible sadness, including disrupted sleep, stomach issues, irritability, and teeth grinding. He specifically addressed how men may experience depression and anxiety by withdrawing, overworking, or becoming easily irritated instead of expressing their feelings.
He also observed that professionals in demanding, public-facing roles—such as healthcare workers, ministers, and entertainers—often feel significant pressure to suppress their emotions to serve others, which can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms over time.
