Psychologist Beste Çokaygil Warns of Summer Depression

Acıbadem Eskişehir Hospital clinical psychologist Beste Çokaygil cautions that the summer season does not bring universal happiness. She notes that while sunshine and holidays are associated with joy, many individuals experience heightened feelings of inadequacy, loneliness and depressive symptoms during the hotter months.

Çokaygil explains that constant exposure to idealized vacation photos, flawless bodies and happy moments on social media can intensify comparison anxiety, especially for those sensitive to body image. She adds that rising temperatures, disrupted sleep patterns and physical fatigue can undermine mental resilience, leading to reduced energy, social withdrawal and persistent low mood. "The sun shining outside does not mean the inner burden is lighter," she said.

She stresses that seasonal depression is not limited to winter and that prolonged gloom should not be ignored. Early recognition of symptoms such as loss of interest, sleep disturbances or hopelessness and seeking professional help are essential, even in the brightest season.
