Psychologist Dilara Boyraz Giriş urges Turkish students to rethink popular university majors

Psychologist Dilara Boyraz Giriş warned that the popularity of a university department does not guarantee it is the right choice for every student. She emphasized that, beyond scores and rankings, students should examine a program’s curriculum, the daily work of its graduates, and align the field with their personal interests, abilities and long‑term career goals.

Giriş highlighted the pressure surrounding the YKS results and the ensuing selection marathon, urging candidates to ask themselves whether they can envision themselves in the profession and whether the field truly suits them. She cited currently trendy areas such as artificial intelligence, data science and sustainability, noting that appealing names can mask the realities of study and work. Giriş also reminded students that flexible pathways—such as double majors, minors and postgraduate shifts—make university choice less final than many believe.
