Psychologist emphasizes unconditional parenting at Healthy Family conference

At the Healthy Family conference held at Payame Noor University, psychologist and university lecturer Fatemeh Safidi discussed essential strategies for raising healthy generations. Safidi highlighted that marriage should be an informed decision, noting that pre-marital counseling is a vital tool for mental health rather than a sign of psychological disorder.

Regarding child-rearing, Safidi advised parents to avoid the pitfalls of perfectionism, stating that being ‘good enough’ is sufficient. She emphasized the importance of unconditional acceptance, urging parents to express love regardless of a child's behavior to avoid creating insecurity.

Key parenting skills identified include active attention—such as providing positive feedback and affirming constructive behavior to build self-confidence—and active listening. Safidi warned against using reprimands, humiliation, or insults, suggesting instead that parents create a calm environment where children can explain their actions.
