Psychologist explains link between child dinosaur interests and cognitive skills
Developmental psychologist Moritz Daum explains the connection between children's intense interest in subjects like dinosaurs and their cognitive development. According to Daum, a professor at the University of Zurich, strong cognitive foundations—such as an extended attention span and the ability to categorize and name concepts—are drivers of deep interest in specific topics, rather than the interest itself creating the intelligence.
Daum notes that while an obsession with dinosaurs does not inherently make a child a genius, intelligent children are more likely to develop such specialized interests. This is partly because acquiring specialized knowledge requires advanced language skills, which allow children to use precise terminology to organize new information.
A 2007 longitudinal study conducted by Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin supports the prevalence of these interests, finding that approximately half of children develop a strong conceptual focus on specific areas, such as dinosaurs or vehicles, at some point in their development.
