Psychologist explains why common memory lapses often stem from lack of concentration

Clinical psychologist Yolanda Gutiérrez explains that common daily lapses, such as forgetting why one entered a room or misplacing keys, are often not signs of dementia or Alzheimer's. Instead, these incidents are frequently caused by a lack of concentration and the habit of multitasking.

Gutiérrez, a specialist at Hospital Universitario Vithas Madrid Arturo Soria, notes that when the brain does not focus sufficiently on a specific action, the information is not properly registered. The rise of new technologies and the tendency to manage multiple thoughts simultaneously can divide attention, making it difficult to retain information. Additionally, changing contexts—such as moving from one room to another—can introduce new stimuli that distract the brain and cause temporary forgetfulness.
