Psychologist Fulda Karaçiçek Advises Turkish Families on Balanced Summer Holidays

Psychologist Fulda Karaçiçek of Medline Adana Hospital warned that completely unstructured summer vacations can cause sleep disturbances, screen‑addiction and loss of motivation in children. She said that when holidays are used properly, children start the new school year “happy and motivated.”

Karaçiçek recommends allowing some flexibility in sleep and daily routines at the start of the break but cautions against extending it, as irregular bedtime habits can disrupt biological rhythms and make the return to school harder. She advises limiting screen time to reasonable periods and encouraging outdoor play, sports and cultural activities. Family interactions such as walks, short trips, board games and daily conversations are highlighted as valuable for strengthening bonds and boosting children’s emotional resilience and confidence. Assigning age‑appropriate responsibilities—like tidying a room or planning a simple daily schedule—is suggested as a way to foster self‑esteem without turning chores into punishment.

By balancing relaxation with structured, screen‑free activities and family engagement, parents can help their children enjoy a healthy holiday and transition smoothly into the upcoming academic year.
