Psychologist Marisa G. Franco identifies signs of ego versus true self-confidence

Psychologist Marisa G. Franco, a professor at the University of Maryland, explores the distinction between outward displays of confidence and genuine self-esteem. In her work, including the book ‘Worth: The New Science of Self-Esteem and Secure Attachment’, Franco notes that individuals with excessive egos often mask insecurity through specific behaviors.

Two primary warning signs of an inflated ego include a constant need to be the center of attention and acting as though one is superior to others. Franco suggests that while truly confident individuals seek sincere connection, those with large egos may view social interactions as opportunities to dominate or win approval to hide their underlying insecurities.
