Psychologist offers advice for children's school adaptation

Psychologist Eva Smiková from the Research Institute of Child Psychology and Pathopsychology (VÚDPaP) provides guidance for parents helping children transition into the new school year. She notes that adaptation periods vary significantly, ranging from one week to two months, and emphasizes the importance of respecting each child's individual pace.

To reduce anxiety, Smiková suggests increasing predictability by visiting the school building together or meeting the teacher in advance. Establishing a consistent routine, such as set breakfast times and preparing clothes ahead of time, can help prevent children from feeling overwhelmed.

Effective communication is also critical. Smiková advises parents to listen actively to children's feelings rather than pressuring them for answers. She notes that children often express underlying needs through surface-level complaints; for example, a child claiming a teacher is 'bad' may actually be expressing exhaustion. Parents are encouraged to respond to the child's actual needs and provide emotional reassurance to help them navigate the transition.
