Psychologist Tracey Cox on sexual frequency and relationship satisfaction

Relationship expert and psychologist Tracey Cox states that there is no scientifically determined frequency for sexual activity that applies to all couples. Sexual needs vary significantly between individuals and change depending on the stage of a relationship.

Research indicates that couples who engage in sexual activity approximately once a week report the highest levels of happiness and relationship satisfaction. Increasing frequency beyond this point does not appear to provide additional benefits to a couple's emotional well-being.

Cox emphasizes that quality and emotional connection are more important than quantity. Sexual desire is often cultivated through communication, mutual trust, and a sense of security rather than occurring purely spontaneously. Treating sexual contact as an obligation or a metric for evaluating a relationship can increase performance anxiety and decrease authentic enjoyment.
