Psychologists explain the difference between healthy silence and the silent treatment

Psychologists are distinguishing between healthy emotional regulation and the manipulative ‘silent treatment’ in interpersonal relationships. Experts note that a healthy withdrawal involves explaining the need for space and providing a timeframe for resuming dialogue, such as stating, ‘I need time to calm down, can we talk tonight?’

In contrast, the silent treatment is characterized by an intentional avoidance of communication without explanation, often used to exert control or punish a partner. This behavior can trigger anxiety and feelings of exclusion in the recipient. To manage such situations, therapists suggest communicating calmly without accusations and avoiding the urge to constantly pursue the person withdrawing, which can reinforce toxic dynamics.

Additionally, mental health professionals warn against the misuse of therapeutic language. While concepts like ‘setting boundaries’ or ‘protecting one’s peace’ are intended to foster healthy relationships, they are sometimes used as excuses to avoid necessary conflict, responsibility, or compromise. A healthy boundary is defined as managing one’s own behavior rather than attempting to control others.
