Sunday Scaries: Psychologists explain weekend anxiety

Psychologists are addressing a common phenomenon known as ‘Sunday Scaries’ or ‘Sunday Blues,’ characterized by feelings of anxiety, sadness, and tension as the weekend concludes. This experience is described as ‘anticipatory anxiety’—worrying about upcoming events that have not yet occurred.

Experts note that the transition from leisure time to professional obligations often triggers stress. A study involving employees in the Netherlands highlighted that individuals experience a dual sense of regret over how the weekend was spent and apprehension regarding the upcoming work week, including deadlines and difficult meetings.

Common symptoms include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and intrusive thoughts about pending tasks. Factors such as household chores, childcare, or receiving work emails on Sunday evening can prevent full recovery from work-related stress. Mental health professionals suggest that if this anxiety becomes persistent and impacts daily life, seeking professional advice is recommended.
