Psychologists identify key behavioral signs of relationship decline
Psychologists highlight various behavioral patterns that can lead to relationship decline or crisis. Mark Travers, a psychologist from Cornell and Colorado Boulder, warns against the accumulation of resentment caused by 'mental accounting.' This occurs when partners keep an invisible tally of daily tasks, such as cooking or chores, creating a sense of debt and imbalance. Based on a 13-year study of 7,000 couples, Travers suggests adopting a communal system where responsibilities are shared based on immediate needs and energy levels rather than strict, individualistic exchanges.
Additionally, psychotherapist María Soranlly Grullón identifies critical warning signs of a relationship in crisis, including decreased communication, loss of affection, and indifference. Grullón notes that when discussions shift from seeking solutions to power struggles over who is right, the connection weakens. A particularly concerning sign is indifference, where one partner stops attempting to communicate or connect, signaling a lack of commitment to resolving issues.
