Psychologists identify warning signs of emotional withdrawal in relationships
Psychologists are highlighting specific communication patterns that signal emotional distance or instability in romantic relationships. One such phenomenon is ‘breadcrumbing,’ described by Dr. Janet Brito of SexTherapy Hawaii as the inconsistent and sporadic showing of interest. In this behavior, an individual provides small amounts of positive reinforcement—such as late-night messages or compliments—to keep a person interested without ever committing to actual plans or a meaningful connection.
Additionally, experts warn that certain linguistic shifts can indicate a partner is withdrawing. The frequent use of dismissive or laconic phrases like ‘it’s fine’ can be a red flag for ‘affective flattening.’ This defensive mechanism involves a gradual emotional disconnection where communication becomes purely formal and devoid of depth. Psychologists note that this type of cold indifference can be more damaging to a relationship than active conflict, as it often signals the beginning of emotional detachment.
