Psychologists offer tips to combat rising road aggression in Germany

A long-term study by the German Insurance Association (GDV) indicates a significant increase in perceived aggression within German road traffic. Aggressive behaviors reported range from honking and obscene gestures to dangerous driving maneuvers and physical attacks.

To combat this trend and promote safer driving, psychologists recommend several strategies. Key advice includes avoiding provocations, such as attempting to teach speeders a lesson by driving slowly, which can escalate tension. Drivers are also encouraged to practice realistic time management by building in buffer periods to reduce time pressure, a major cause of stress. Additionally, adopting a change of perspective—viewing the road from the viewpoint of pedestrians, cyclists, or other motorists—can foster greater mindfulness and reduce conflict over limited road space.
