Psychologists warn against AI-driven therapy services

A controversy has emerged regarding the use of artificial intelligence in psychological counseling, specifically involving a platform titled ‘Na terapiji sa Danijelom’ (In Therapy with Danijela) led by clinical psychologist Danijela Ostojić.

The platform offers access to an AI chatbot for a monthly subscription, marketing it as a tool for support and self-reflection. However, critics and legal experts argue that the branding blurs the line between self-help tools and professional psychotherapy. Legal expert Nenad Cvjetićanin noted that using a licensed psychologist's reputation to promote an AI service may mislead users into expecting professional medical treatment.

The Association of Psychologists of Republika Srpska has issued a warning to the public regarding the professional, ethical, and safety risks of AI systems presented as replacements for human therapists. Experts emphasize that psychotherapy relies on the human connection and emotional understanding between a client and a therapist—elements an AI cannot replicate. Concerns were also raised regarding the potential for users to develop parasocial relationships or a dependency on AI for decision-making.
