Psychologists warn overprotective parenting may foster narcissism
Psychological research and experts are warning against modern parenting styles that prioritize constant praise and the removal of all obstacles, noting that such approaches may inadvertently foster narcissistic traits rather than healthy self-esteem.
Experts suggest that while healthy self-esteem is built through unconditional emotional acceptance and reliable boundaries, narcissism is fueled by constant overvaluation and the message that a child is inherently superior to others. This creates a fragile self-image that can lead to anger, frustration, and a lack of empathy when the child inevitably faces failure.
Child psychiatrist Martina Leibovici-Mühlberger and author Andreas Salcher discuss the phenomenon of children who are never challenged, noting that a lack of guidance and the avoidance of struggle can result in individuals who struggle with self-responsibility. Psychologist Eva Asselmann adds that overprotective 'helicopter parenting' can signal to children that the world is unsafe, potentially sabotaging their ability to feel in control of their own lives. Experts recommend praising effort and the learning process rather than innate talent to help build resilience and frustration tolerance.
