Psychology and behavior studies explore the human-cat bond
Psychological and behavioral studies are shedding light on the relationship between humans and cats. Research led by psychologist Denise Guastello at Carroll University suggests that individuals who prefer cats often score higher in ‘Openness to Experience’ within the Big Five personality model. These individuals tend to exhibit unconventional thinking, a curiosity for art and culture, and a high valuation of autonomy.
Veterinary expert Carlos Gutiérrez notes that while cats are often viewed as independent, they are highly observant of human routines. Cats learn by associating actions with consequences, meaning they can adapt their behavior based on the signals and boundaries set by their owners. To ensure harmonious coexistence, experts recommend maintaining consistent rules and responses to prevent the reinforcement of demanding or problematic behaviors.
