Psychology experts examine fears of replacement and digital visibility

Psychological experts are examining the rising prevalence of existential anxieties in contemporary society, specifically the fear of being replaced and the compulsion for digital visibility.

Research suggests that the fear of replacement stems from evolutionary needs for social belonging. In human history, being replaced by a group meant losing protection and resources; today, this manifests as a perceived ‘social death’ that triggers chronic stress and loss of motivation in professional and personal contexts.

Parallel to this, the influence of social media has shifted social recognition into quantifiable metrics like likes and followers. Psychologist Gabriele Zanardi notes that social platforms have transformed voluntary behavior into an automatic habit, where users often check their presence online simply to ‘verify they still exist.’ This phenomenon is particularly impactful on the adolescent brain, where reward circuits mature faster than self-control mechanisms, making the need for social approval a significant psychological driver.
