Psychology explains the Barnum effect and astrological perceptions

Psychological research provides explanations for why individuals often find astrological descriptions highly accurate. This phenomenon is known as the Barnum effect, or the Forer effect, named after psychologist Bertram Forer, who demonstrated in 1948 that people tend to believe generic personality descriptions are uniquely tailored to them.

In the context of intuition and zodiac signs, such as Scorpio, psychology views intuition as rapid judgment based on pattern recognition and subconscious processing rather than celestial influence. While astrology suggests certain signs possess heightened intuition, scientific frameworks, including Daniel Kahneman’s dual-process theory, suggest these perceptions are often driven by cognitive processes rather than birth dates.

Furthermore, studies regarding relationship stability and astrological compatibility have failed to find significant evidence supporting astrological predictions. A 2020 study published in the journal Genus, which analyzed over 65,000 Swedish marriages, found no consistent support for the idea that astrological combinations reliably predict relationship longevity or fidelity.
