Psychology links re-watching familiar media to stress reduction

Psychologists suggest that re-watching familiar movies or series is a tool for emotional regulation and stress reduction. Research published in the Journal of Consumer Research by Cristel Antonia Russell and Sidney J. Levy indicates that media re-consumption is not a passive act, but a restorative and hedonic experience.

Familiarity provides predictability, which offers a mental refuge during periods of anxiety, fatigue, or personal transition. Unlike new content that requires constant attention and cognitive effort to manage uncertainty, known stories allow viewers to minimize mental load. This sense of control can reduce cortisol levels, as viewers can anticipate specific emotional outcomes, such as laughter or comfort, without the risk of unpleasant surprises.

Additionally, nostalgia plays a role in psychological well-being, with familiar productions acting as temporal anchors that help individuals reconnect with their identity.
