Psychology of attraction and attachment theory

Psychological research explores how reciprocal attraction and attachment theories influence human relationships and social interactions. Reciprocal attraction occurs when individuals tend to like those who demonstrate interest in them. This phenomenon is driven by a reduction in social uncertainty; when acceptance feels probable, the emotional risk of rejection decreases, making interactions feel safer and more positive.

Complementing this, attachment theory, originally developed by psychiatrist John Bowlby, describes how early bonds with caregivers shape expectations for future relationships. Common patterns include secure attachment, characterized by a balance of intimacy and autonomy, and various insecure styles such as anxious or avoidant attachment. While these patterns help explain behaviors regarding trust and vulnerability, experts caution against using them as permanent labels or definitive diagnoses, noting that attachment styles can evolve over time.
