Psychology of gratitude and the hedonic treadmill
Psychological concepts such as the hedonic treadmill and the Better-Than-Now Bias explain why high achievers often struggle to maintain happiness despite reaching significant milestones. The hedonic treadmill describes the human tendency to return to a baseline level of happiness shortly after a positive event, while the Better-Than-Now Bias involves a pattern of constructing upward comparisons that overlook existing progress.
To counter these tendencies, practicing gratitude is suggested as a way to train attention on current successes while continuing to pursue future goals. One approach to fostering this perspective involves viewing life's blessings as a combination lock, recognizing that meaningful experiences are often the result of a specific, unlikely sequence of decisions, accidents, and opportunities.
