Psychology of personality tests and self-perception
Personality tests have seen a significant rise in popularity, used by millions for career planning, relationship awareness, and emotional growth. Psychology suggests this trend is driven by a fundamental human desire for identity, meaning, and structured ways to understand behavioral patterns and social differences.
However, psychological insights also warn that self-perception can be flawed. Common cognitive biases include overestimating or underestimating personal abilities, assuming knowledge of one's own decision-making processes, and incorrectly assuming knowledge of others' thoughts. Additionally, individuals often adopt fixed labels—such as being ‘shy’ or ‘unable to handle stress’—which can limit their perceived potential, despite the fact that self-concept is constantly evolving through new experiences.
