Psychology of relationships: the risks of conflict avoidance and toxic communication

Psychological research suggests that the total absence of conflict in relationships is not necessarily a sign of health, but may indicate suppressed emotions. Individuals who avoid conflict often do so as a coping mechanism learned from environments where disagreement was unsafe. This avoidance can lead to passive-aggressive behavior, emotional withdrawal, and a loss of authenticity, as suppressed anger often manifests as resentment or manipulation.

Relationship researcher John Gottman identifies four specific communication patterns, known as the ‘four horsemen of the apocalypse,’ that can damage partnerships: criticism of a partner's character, contempt (such as sarcasm or eye-rolling), constant defensiveness, and stonewalling (withdrawing from conversation). While these behaviors are detrimental, experts suggest that recognizing these patterns and replacing them with respectful communication and accountability can help maintain healthy connections.
