Sade Traditional Village in Lombok hit by massive fire
A massive fire struck the Sade Traditional Village in Lombok Tengah, West Nusa Tenggara, on the night of Saturday, August 22, 2026. The blaze rapidly consumed numerous traditional Sasak houses, which are constructed from highly flammable materials such as bamboo, wood, and thatch roofs.
Reports indicate that approximately 120 houses were destroyed, including 89 traditional structures and 31 semi-traditional ones. The fire also damaged several community facilities, including a mosque, a museum, and various tourism-related shops. Beyond physical structures, the Ministry of Culture reported the loss of significant cultural heritage, including ancestral weapons like kris and spears, ritual musical instruments, and ancient Sanskrit manuscripts.
Authorities suspect the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. While no fatalities were reported in the Sade incident, hundreds of residents were displaced, with some reports suggesting up to 700 families were affected. The local government and the Ministry of Culture are now focusing on emergency relief and the long-term restoration of the historic site to preserve its cultural integrity.
