PT Genosky Tira Propertindo named suspect in Batam forest destruction

The Ministry of Forestry's Law Enforcement Agency has named PT Genosky Tira Propertindo (GTP) a corporate suspect for the alleged destruction of protected forest in Tanjung Piayu, Batam. Investigators found approximately 1.98 hectares of forest damaged due to land clearing and hill excavation for the construction of an 897-meter access road.

Authorities have interviewed 12 witnesses and two experts, seizing information regarding the company's use of heavy machinery. Civil society groups, including Auriga Nusantara, have urged investigators to look into potential involvement by other parties and to consider money laundering charges to trace profits from these activities. Environmental advocates emphasize that destroying forest cover on small islands like Batam increases risks of flooding, erosion, and drought.
