PT Ghimli Indonesia workers protest over HR staff presence

Hundreds of workers at PT Ghimli Indonesia in Batam held a protest on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after two Human Resources (HR) staff members entered the factory premises without prior coordination. The workers blocked the main entrance and locked the gates, questioning the purpose of the staff's arrival while production has been halted since late September.

During mediation facilitated by local police, HR staff explained that they were retrieving documents required by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan to deactivate worker memberships. The HR team noted confusion regarding the company's status, stating that while internal reports suggest the factory ceased operations on September 18, they have yet to receive official documentation regarding the closure to finalize employee administration.

Approximately 70 security personnel from Polresta Barelang and Polda Kepri were deployed to manage the situation. The workers, represented by the FSPMI labor union, expressed concerns over the inconsistent explanations provided by the HR staff regarding their presence at the facility.
