PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry conducts layoffs of 1,900 workers
PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI) is conducting phased layoffs affecting approximately 1,900 workers out of a total workforce of 6,325 in Morowali Utara, Central Sulawesi. The company cited operational and financial adjustments, including necessary equipment overhauls, as reasons for the downsizing.
The Central Sulawesi Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) has urged the company to ensure all worker rights are fulfilled in accordance with legal regulations. DPRD member Takwin emphasized that large-scale layoffs impact not only the employees but also their families and the local economy surrounding the industrial zone.
Local government authorities have been called upon to supervise the process and maintain transparent communication between the company, labor unions, and workers. PT GNI stated it is coordinating with the Manpower Office regarding worker rights, including access to the Job Loss Benefit (JKP) program through BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. The company is also currently undergoing a suspension of debt payment obligations (PKPU) following a commercial court decision.
