PT Kereta Api Indonesia accelerates level crossing safety upgrades
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is accelerating a safety improvement program for level crossings. As of August 25, 2026, the company has completed or reached 77.37 percent progress on 145 out of 190 priority safety points.
The initiative includes the construction and installation of safety facilities, guard houses, signage, safety equipment, and communication devices. KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that these improvements are essential for the safety of train operations and the public living near railway tracks.
KAI has mapped 3,674 level crossings within its operational areas, consisting of 1,864 guarded crossings, 907 unguarded crossings, and 903 unrecorded or unguarded crossings. The company has identified 1,810 crossings as the focus for safety enhancements and has verified 1,638 locations to determine specific targets based on field conditions.
