PT official discusses Lula succession and Congressional strategy
Éden Valadares, the national communications secretary for the Workers' Party (PT), has addressed the political landscape regarding President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s future leadership and legislative relations.
Regarding the 2030 presidential elections, Valadares warned that politicians attempting to organize early for succession risk “burning their start.” He noted that in 2010, Dilma Rousseff was selected because she was perceived as the candidate who “conspired the least.” While acknowledging the difficulty of finding a leader of Lula’s stature, Valadares identified Fernando Haddad, Rui Costa, Rafael Fonteles, and Camilo Santana as figures representing the party’s renewal process.
On the legislative front, Valadares stated that Lula’s fourth term will require significant political maneuvering to build majorities in the National Congress. He suggested that support will likely be built around specific interests rather than a fixed, monolithic majority. He also emphasized a desire for greater transparency regarding budget amendments and the relationship between the Executive and Legislative branches, aiming to ensure public control over the budget prevails.
