Hungary faces political shifts and tensions with Chinese investors

Hungary is undergoing significant political and economic shifts under the leadership of Péter Magyar. The government's confrontational stance toward Chinese companies, including Semcorp, CATL, and BYD, has drawn criticism from Beijing. Analysts suggest these actions may signal that previous investment agreements could become political targets following changes in administration.

In the domestic political sphere, the Hungarian Parliament is set to elect a new President. The Tisza Party has nominated Baka Andrást, while Fidesz is boycotting the process. This transition is linked to constitutional amendments that may lead to a semi-presidential system with a directly elected head of state.

Additionally, the country faces energy security challenges. Péter Magyar has criticized previous administrations for failing to prepare for energy and water crises, which recently impacted the Paks Nuclear Power Plant due to extreme heat and drought. Meanwhile, discussions regarding the ownership of solar energy infrastructure continue, with significant portions of the market held by state-owned MVM and Mol, alongside various private and foreign entities.
