Péter Magyar accuses Balázs Németh of tobacco lobbying

Péter Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party, has leveled serious allegations against Fidesz politician Balázs Németh regarding tobacco taxation and potential lobbying. Magyar claims that Németh is acting as a ‘tobacco lobbyist’ by opposing increases in excise taxes on tobacco products, arguing that Németh’s family has benefited significantly from tobacco-related businesses, which Magyar alleges earned over 4 billion forint in recent years.

The controversy arises following a parliamentary debate over a government proposal that includes both diesel subsidies and an increase in excise taxes on tobacco products. The proposed tax hike could lead to a price increase of approximately 5% to 12% for consumers.

Balázs Németh has criticized the proposal, labeling it a ‘bad suggestion’ and accusing Magyar of lying to voters. Németh argued that the tax increase was hidden within the legislation and expressed concerns regarding the lack of support for diesel drivers and transport companies.
