Péter Magyar defends strict migration policy following French unrest

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has used recent violent unrest in France to reaffirm Hungary’s commitment to strict migration policies and rigorous border protection. Responding to footage of vandalism, arson, and clashes between protesters and police in French cities such as Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, Magyar stated that such scenes make it understandable why Hungary maintains a hardline stance on migration.

The unrest in France, which reportedly involved approximately 800,000 protesters, was initially driven by rising living costs, educational system issues, and public service concerns. However, the situation escalated into widespread property damage and injuries to hundreds of police officers and emergency workers. Magyar emphasized the distinction between the right to peaceful protest and criminal acts of violence.

Magyar’s comments align with a broader trend among several European leaders, including Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who have advocated for tighter border controls to prevent similar social and security crises. While Magyar maintains that Hungary will not yield to external pressure regarding its immigration stance, the events have highlighted ongoing political divisions within the European Union regarding asylum and migration management.
