Hungary: PM Péter Magyar launches anti-corruption crackdown
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has launched 'Operation Purgatory' to investigate corruption and recover state assets allegedly misappropriated during Viktor Orbán’s 16-year administration. Magyar claims the previous government operated as a 'mafia state,' causing economic damage estimated at 8% to 10% of the national GDP.
Recent anti-corruption actions have led to the arrest of two former ministers following the suspension of their parliamentary immunity. Former Culture Minister Balázs Hankó is under investigation for the alleged misuse of 50 million euros from the National Cultural Fund. Former National Development Minister Miklós Seszták is facing allegations involving 30 million euros in bribes related to transport and construction contracts between 2015 and 2018.
Additionally, the National Asset Protection and Recovery Office (NVVH), led by Anna Unger, has asserted jurisdiction over several major corruption cases, including the Volánbusz matter. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Magyar himself faces legal scrutiny regarding a June 2024 incident involving the disposal of a mobile phone.
