Péter Magyar pledges Hungary will be a reliable EU ally

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar declared that Hungary aims to become a reliable ally within the European Union, seeking to restore trust with EU partners following 16 years of Viktor Orbán's leadership.

Speaking during the 70th anniversary of the 1956 uprising against Soviet rule, Magyar emphasized that Hungary is not a ‘ferry country’ that can drift indefinitely between East and West. He stated that the Hungarian people made a clear choice in 1956 to belong to a free and democratic Europe. His pro-European stance stands in sharp contrast to former leader Viktor Orbán, who frequently used the anniversary to criticize Brussels and compare the EU to the Soviet Union.

The commemorations in Budapest were attended by high-level officials, including EU leaders and dignitaries from over 40 countries. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a speech during an official parliamentary session, which was boycotted by the opposition, including Orbán's Fidesz party.
