Hungary terminates HUF 23 trillion motorway concession

The Hungarian government has announced its intention to terminate a 35-year motorway concession agreement with MKIF Zrt., a company linked to businessmen Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szijj. Prime Minister Péter Magyar described the contract as a “felfoghatatlan méretű, 23 ezer milliárd forintos mutyi” (unimaginable scale, 23 trillion forint corruption), alleging it was designed to siphon public funds to political allies.

Transport and Investment Minister Dávid Vitézy stated that the state could operate the motorway network 53 percent more cheaply than the current concessionaire. He noted that the full term of the agreement could cost taxpayers approximately HUF 23,196 billion in nominal terms. The government is seeking a mutual agreement to end the contract and has filed criminal complaints regarding the M6 motorway operating rights, citing potential breach of trust and abuse of office.

In a separate development, the government has introduced a 20,000 forint diesel subsidy for private individuals owning diesel vehicles with a maximum power of 110 kilowatts. The support will be paid in four installments between September and December 2026 to mitigate rising fuel costs.
