Péter Magyar visits Vatican for meeting with Pope Leo XIV

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar conducted an official visit to the Vatican, where he was granted a private audience with Pope Leo XIV on September 24, 2026. During their meeting, discussions covered various international and domestic issues, including the socio-economic situation in Hungary, the rise of artificial intelligence, the challenges of youth loneliness, and the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Magyar also met with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher at the Secretariat of State to coordinate on international matters. As a gesture of diplomacy, the Prime Minister presented the Pope with two historical gifts: an Italian edition of Pope Pius XII’s 1956 radio address and an old English edition of Cardinal József Mindszenty’s memoirs. Magyar extended an invitation for the Pope to visit Hungary.

Following the formal diplomatic proceedings, Magyar shared informal moments on social media, including videos of himself dancing with pedestrians to Ricchi e Poveri music in the streets of Rome and riding a Vespa. These clips have gained viral attention, highlighting a contrast between his official duties and a relaxed personal outing in the Italian capital.
