Péter Magyar’s Tisza Party secures Hungarian supermajority
Following a historic parliamentary election, Péter Magyar and his Tisza Party have secured a supermajority in Hungary, marking a significant shift away from the long-standing rule of Viktor Orbán and the Fidesz party.
In a move related to government restructuring, Prime Minister Magyar and Transport Minister Dávid Vitézy announced the suspension of the Budapest southern circular railway project. The decision follows findings by the European Court of Auditors regarding public-procurement irregularities. The investigation suggested that V-Híd, a company owned by Hungary’s wealthiest individual Lőrinc Mészáros, may have colluded with project planners to gain an unfair advantage during the tender process.
To avoid the withdrawal of EU funding and prevent Hungarian taxpayers from bearing the costs, the government is terminating the contract with V-Híd and launching a new public procurement procedure. This follows previous actions taken against Mészáros, including the termination of motorway concessions and the withdrawal of EU funding from his food-industry ventures.
