Péter Szijjártó faces bribery investigation in Hungary

Authorities in Hungary have transferred a corruption investigation against former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó to the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK). The case involves allegations of bribery and receiving undue benefits in connection with his recent appointment to a high-level position at the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD.

The investigation was initiated following a complaint by civic activist István Tényi. Prosecutors stated that the information provided "may indicate signs of a crime – receiving benefits in connection with activities for a business entity." Because Szijjártó has resigned from his parliamentary mandate, he no longer holds legal immunity and can be held criminally liable. If found guilty, he faces a potential prison sentence of up to three years.

The investigation into Szijjártó's role at BYD comes amid broader scrutiny regarding state subsidies granted to the Chinese automaker. Additionally, the Hungarian Parliament’s Committee on National Security is examining potential risks to state security related to his new professional affiliation.
